Student Life Fall planning efforts are organized by committees based on core work.  These core work committees include:

  • Student Support
  • Health & Well Being
  • Essential Services, which includes Housing and Dining
  • Community Development & Learning Experiences
  • Educational Programming (such as social justice, leadership, intercultural, and personal development)

As needs and opportunities emerge during planning, additional groups are formed.  Examples include the student-driven efforts of the COVIE-19 Campus Challenge and the Shared Responsibility Culture of Care efforts.

The Student Life committees align closely with other institutional efforts, such as the various public health, Provost-charged, and ethics committees.

The following groups of students are actively engaged and consulted in the planning processes for returning to a residentially-based 2020-21 academic year, and more are added as the work progresses:

  1. Central Student Government – The executive officers meet with Student Life leadership, the Provost Committee chairs to advise on planning. The CSG Assembly is conducting a student survey seeking input to inform planning efforts.
  2. Campus Climate Advisory Council (CCAC) – This broad-based representative group of over 40 students was constituted in January 2020, initially to advise Presidential Debate 2020 planning efforts. It is now being leveraged to advise on Fall planning. It is comprised of representatives from governance structures, advisory boards, identity-based communities, student organizations and student employee groups within Student Life.
  3. COVID-19 Campus Challenge Participants – This partnership between the College of Engineering and Student Life was the brain child of two students within the College of Engineering (David Chang and Sujai Arakali) who proposed launching a design competition to engage students in innovative planning for campus regarding navigating the impact of COVID-19. Peer mentors and expert staff and faculty are advising 609 students participating in 131 design teams, on issue such as Housing, Transportation, Mental Health and Co-Curricular Engagement, Food Insecurity and DEI initiatives.  This effort has attracted undergraduate and graduate students representing at least 12 schools and colleges.
  4. Influential Student Leaders Advise on Creation of Community of Care Pledge – 18 student leaders representing Central Student Government, Fraternity and Sorority Life (all four councils), Intercollegiate Athletics, and Residence Hall Assembly are co-constructing the elements of the Community of Care Pledge and its implementation to effect shared responsibility for safe and health behavior.
  5. Units, Committees and Schools/Colleges Engaging Students and Student Employees in Conversations Regarding Planning Work – Various Student Life units, Provost appointed committees, and Student Life planning committees engage students. The virtual vehicle is resulting in widespread engagement.
