
About the Award
Presidential Citations are awarded to individuals who have gone above and beyond in their service to the University, have made a lasting impact through significant contributions and dedication to the betterment of society, or have overcome great obstacles and persevered in the face of adversity.
Criteria and Guidelines
Eligibility
While a connection to the University of Michigan or contributions reflecting Michigan’s unique strengths are valued, they are not prerequisites for recognition.
Nominees may be individuals of all backgrounds, no matter their position or title, such as dedicated, long-serving faculty and staff as well as exceptional members of society whose contributions may not have received the recognition they deserve.
Individuals who are deceased will not be considered eligible for nomination.
Active office holders may be considered for presidential citations.
Exceptions to the criteria, guidelines, and eligibility can be made only by the president.
Nomination
Deans, directors, and executive officers of the University are eligible to submit nominations.
Nominators should note that the president strives for a robust pool of presidential citation recipients enriched by individuals from all backgrounds.
NOTE: Self-nominations will not be accepted for consideration.
Confidentiality
The nominee should not be informed that their name has been put forward, and the nominator should not solicit letters of support on behalf of the nominee.
Not all excellent candidates can be recognized, and knowledge of a failed nomination can be embarrassing and harmful.
Official notification of the president’s wish to grant a presidential citation is made by the president on behalf of the University of Michigan.
