I was heartbroken to hear of the passing of Charlie Munger, and join with his family and friends in mourning his passing.
Charlie was a great friend of the University of Michigan, and even more, he was a member of our family. He was an undergraduate mathematics student at U-M in the 1940’s, and returned to lecture at various U-M schools and advise us on our investment strategies. In fact, I met with him just over two weeks ago, and he was full of wisdom and devotion for our university.
Charlie was passionate about improving the lives of our students; about giving them the amenities they need in order to connect and rise and succeed. In 2013 he gave what was then the most generous donation in university history to establish the Munger Graduate Residences, an innovative approach to graduate education focused on connection and community. He also gave generously to strengthen and sustain our living and learning communities, connecting students and fostering leaders.
We’re so grateful to Charlie Munger for his commitment and generosity, for being a friend of our university, and even more, a cherished member of our family.
