U.S. Policy Developments

Dear faculty, staff and students,

The University of Michigan, like many institutions across the country, is navigating a variety of challenges related to recent U.S. policy developments. Many of you have reached out to share your concerns about potential impacts on scientific research, higher education and vulnerable communities. I hear you, and I appreciate your patience and engagement as we assess our legal obligations, advocate for our mission, and seek opportunities to demonstrate leadership in this time of uncertainty.

In particular, I want to acknowledge concerns regarding the recent announcement that the National Institutes of Health will significantly reduce its indirect cost recovery rate. Such a change would undoubtedly impact scientific research and the critical administrative and operational infrastructure that supports it within universities. Please be assured that my fellow university leaders and I are actively working to support researchers and protect the strength of our research enterprise.

Please continue to visit the Key Issues page for ongoing updates and to submit any questions you may have. I welcome your thoughts and suggestions as we continue to address these important issues together.

Sincerely,

Santa J. Ono
President
