To All Members of the University of Michigan Community:
For generations, the University of Michigan has led the way in advancing understanding of our nation’s most pressing issues – and next year our students, faculty, and staff will have a novel opportunity to enhance this essential quality of our mission at the national level.
I am pleased to announce that the University of Michigan has been selected to host a U.S. presidential debate in the fall of 2020.
This event places us squarely at the center of next year’s presidential election – and will help our nation’s voters be prepared to make an informed choice on Election Day in November.
Throughout the year, we’ll learn about the issues affecting our nation, and engage in this important aspect of the democratic process together.
The televised debate will be staged at the Crisler Center, and we will plan experiences related to the debate in our classrooms and elsewhere on our campus.
Students will also be part of our preparation for the debate, including our work to minimize disruptions, maintain a safe campus, and encourage voter registration.
Public service and civic engagement are at the core of our great university and its history.
This is a tremendous opportunity for the university community to contribute to our democracy, while setting an example of civic engagement and shining a light on the outstanding academic strengths of our institution.
Student Life is planning town halls to share information about the debate and hear students’ ideas for related activities.
Thank you and Go Blue!
Sincerely,
Mark S. Schlissel
President
