Since he’s stepped on campus—and even before—President Mark S. Schlissel has immersed himself in learning about the University of Michigan and the state he now calls home.     President Schlissel praises the innovation of U-M faculty at the MCubed Symposium and announces he will convene a panel of distinguished U-M faculty members to focus on the biological sciences. The panel is part of his work to collaborate with faculty to develop strategic synergies that will help U-M better leverage the excellence across its academic programs.

    President Schlissel promotes the value of diversity for 50 NextProf Workshop participants considering careers in academia. “I see it as our special obligation – and one of our greatest privileges – as educators to extend our reach across the full breadth of our society,” he says. “Because talent is uniformly distributed across the populace. But opportunity most certainly is not.”

    In presenting the medal to philosopher and activist Agnes Heller, President Schlissel says, “At the University of Michigan, traditions are measured in big, powerful terms—like lives saved, generations inspired, and understanding increased across the full breadth of humanity. They include a deep commitment to improving our world, and in this case, they are represented in full measure by our heroic alumnus, Raoul Wallenberg.”
