The grief and heartbreak I feel today is a reflection of our collective sadness and anger over this ongoing national tragedy. The victims of the shootings this week in cities around our nation are our brothers, fathers, sons and neighbors. Our friends. The men and women who bravely protect and defend us. In this time that seems to pull us ever farther apart, we must endeavor to talk to each other and learn from one another’s experiences in order to find our way back to each other. We can heal together and inspire change through a renewed commitment to greater empathy and deeper understanding. It is our best hope against hate, violence and ignorance, and is what informs our ongoing work to develop a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment at U-M.
